400 YEARS

What an interesting Book the Bible is! A remarkable collection of sixty-six individual books bound into one priceless volume. There are books of history, books of poetry, and books of prophecy. There are four books telling the lovely story of the life and ministry of Jesus, and there are twenty-one letters written to individuals and to congregations of Christians.

About forty different authors were involved in the writing and although the first and last of these lived centuries apart there is not one mistake, no contradictions and no discrepancies. The Bible is one inspired whole whose great message concerns God and His Son, God’s hatred of sin, and the remedy which has been provided.
And what a variety of men God used as His penmen: rich men and poor men. statesmen and herdsmen, shepherds and fishermen. There were kings, prophets, and poets. One writer was a doctor and one was a tax-collector.
They wrote in such a variety of places too: in palaces and prisons: in mountains and meadows; in deserts and in lonely dwellings; at home and in exile. They wrote in Judea, in Galilee, in Rome, in Corinth, in Ephesus and Patmos. Surely it must be conceded that the Bible is a remarkable Book which everyone should read.
But for many of us, reading would have been a problem for it was written in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic. These languages meant the precious volume was inaccessible to many who speak only English and so we are indebted to those scholars who over the years have spent long hours of painstaking study and research in translating the sacred writing for us so that we could understand them.
Four hundred years ago in 1611 AD a new translation was printed. It was the work of a group of such scholars, who with royal approval had undertaken the task of translating. Because they had royal authority for their work, and since the King at that time was James 1st, the finished translation became known as ‘The King James Version’ or the ‘K.J.V.’ and was known also as the ‘Authorised Version’ or the ‘AV’.
How important the Bible is to us, revealing the Holy character of God, telling us of His great love for men, but of his equally great abhorrence of sin. He is a God of love but also a God of light who cannot tolerate sin. How could such a God admit men to His heaven when He hates their sin? It seemed an insurmountable problem, but God Himself provided the answer and "the Holy Scriptures are able to make thee wise unto salvation", 2 Tim.3.15. Paul the Apostle explains, "When the fullness of the time was come God sent forth His Son…to redeem", Gal. 4.4,5. Another Apostle wrote "In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins", 1 John. 4. 9,10. The provision of salvation for guilty men cost God His beloved Son and it cost the Son His life. A sinlessly perfect Man suffered and died for sins at Calvary. How? Why? The Bible explains that Jesus the sinless One became a substitute for sinful men. Those who trust Him as Saviour and confess Him as Lord can say simply, "He died for me" or, in the words of yet another Apostle, "He bare our sins in His own body on the tree", 1Pet. 2.24.

O how unlike the complex works of man;
Heaven’s easy, artless unencumbered plan.

Reader, do determine to read and believe the Bible and know the enjoyment of forgiveness now and the assurance of a home in heaven when life is over.

The 70th. Anniversary of the end of WW2

This year marks the 70th. Anniversary of the end of WW2. May 8th. is known as VE Day, or, Victory in Europe, and three late summer dates chronicle VJ Day. August 14th - Japan surrendered; August 15th – Surrender was announced to the world, and September 2 - Ceremony and formal signing of surrender.
VJ Day marked the end of WWII, and the cessation of fighting against Japan. It is called "Victory In Japan Day or "Victory Over Japan.

I was ten years old when the BBC announced Germany’s surrender on the radio. It was an overwhelming sense of relief, of feeling safe, knowing that there would be no more V2 rockets flying over our house with the possibility of its power cutting out and it plummeting to the ground causing an explosion destroying lives and property.

My relief was small compared to the inmates of the Nazis concentration camps rescued 70 years ago. Those camps included this list supplied by Wikipedia, Auschwitz-Birkenau Belzec Bergen-BelsenChelmno Dachau Ebensee Flossenb├╝rgGross-Rosen Janowska Kaiserwald Majdanek Mauthausen-Gusen Natzweiler-Struthof Neuengamme Nordhausen (Dora-Mittelbau) Sachsenhausen (Oranienburg) PlaszowRavensbr├╝ck Sobibor Stutthof Terezin (Theresienstadt) Treblinka Westerbork. Hitler’s programme to exterminate the Jews was halted, but not before six million souls perished in those camps.

There is a rise today of anti-Semitic incidents recorded in the UK, the highest last year since those horrific days seen in Germany decades ago. After the recent Paris attacks on Jews, some Synagogues in the UK have put barbed wire around their buildings, anticipating a terrorist attack.

Hitler’s plan for World dominion failed, as did his destruction of the nation of Israel, which failed too. All attempts in the past to destroy Israel have failed and any future attempt will fail also. God is sovereign and He will not go back on His Word that He gave to Abraham and David. He made a covenant with both men, with Abraham concerning the land, bordering the Euphrates and the Great River of Egypt, and with David concerning the throne. (Genesis 15 and 18, and David, Psalm 89)

A highly significant happening was prophesied in Jeremiah 25:11, which reads, “And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations. God told Jeremiah two things, firstly that Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon would make the land of Palestine desolate and secondly carry its inhabitants away captive for 70 years in Babylon (Iraq). Commentators place the captivity between 606BC and 516BC depending upon which of the three deportations of captives it referrs to. This 70 year captivity of Israel with Jerusalem trodden underfoot marks the beginning of a period of history known as ‘The Times of the Gentiles’. During this period four World Empires arose to dominate the known world. (1) Babylon: (2) Medo-Persia (Iran): (3) Greece and (4) Rome. All of these are past powers but a fifth power will arise having characteristics of these four previous kingdoms.  The Book of Daniel gives the historical rise of these four kingdoms in the first six chapters, the last six chapters tell us prophetically something of the nature of the four and also of the fifth.

Jesus said in Luke 21:24, “And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” In Luke 21 and Matthew 24 Christ gave details of the rise and fall of the fifth power which is yet future. The fall of that fifth kingdom will mark the end of the times of the Gentiles and usher in a new realm, the Kingdom of Christ on earth.

Daniel chapter 9 tells us not of 70 years but 70 weeks. However these weeks are not weeks of days but weeks of years outlining a period of 490 years. These 490 years are divided into three, 49 years, 434 years and 7 years, and the final seven divided into two periods of three and a half each. That seven years is the Tribulation that will come upon all the world, but the second half is The Great Tribulation that Jeremiah calls ‘The time of Jacob’s trouble’.
At the commencement of the seven years Satan will empower a man, called ‘The Beast’ in Revelation chapter 13, and ‘The man of sin’ in 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. He will force people to have his mark on their hand and forehead in order to buy and sell. Will that mark be his number 666? Over thirty years ago I gave a lift to a young man who told me he had an interest in numerology. He produced from his briefcase an A4 paper with some names on it, and alongside the name a number. Hitler’s name was on the paper, and Mendleson and others. Then he pointed to a number at the bottom of the sheet which was 666, and said, “That is my number!” I told him of the man in Revelation chapter 13 and what his end would be. I glanced across to see his face, one I shall never forget, it was evil! Was this young man playing a prank on me with his pre-arranged paper? I don’t know, but I do know this, the Man of Sin who is the beast could be alive today?

My dear reader if you are not saved, not born again, I believe that the time is short. It is essential for you to repent of your sin and receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour before He comes to make war with those who reject Him. Revelation chapter 19 verse 15 says, “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Be saved now and be ready.  God bless.

Now here is the weather forecast

Few of us will soon forget the meteorological blunder committed in 2009 when weather forecasters predicted a ‘barbecue summer’. With what excited expectation we waited for the heat and the balmy sunshine but our hopes were soon dashed as day after day we woke to grey skies and heavier than usual rainfall. Have men forgotten that God is in full control of His universe and every aspect of it? How easily He can confound the pronouncements ofpuny men and bring to nought their boasted wisdom.

Hope and anticipation were replaced by disappointment and the lesson must be learned that we cannot rely upon the predictions and promises of men. Many felt they had been deceived and some were angry since they had made their holiday plans on the strength of men’s vain words, choosing to stay at home instead of jetting off to sunnier climes.

How often has this scenario been repeated! Politicians and their spin-doctors appear upbeat and aim to convince the electorate that they have the solutions to all the problems. Vote for them and the economy will improve, your living standard will be raised and everything will, in time, be better. Religious leaders and spiritual advisers calm the fears of their congregations, assuring them that they need not worry: continue living a good life; keep performing charitable acts; be regular in church attendance and there is a good chance that you will get to heaven.

My friend, in these vitally important and eternal matters you cannot afford the slightest uncertainty. One moment after death is too late to discover that, like Eve, you have allowed yourself to be duped by lies and your eternal fate is sealed. In fact, in chapter 20 of the last book in the Bible, Revelation, the devil is described in verse 10 as the one "that deceived them". How thankful we should be that God will never deceive or disappoint us. His Word is infallible and what God promises He can perform.

Can we be sure, here and now, that we will be in heaven forever? Is there a way that definitely leads to heaven? Is it possible to know that our sins have been forgiven and that we will never have to face the consequences of our sins in hell?

Absolutely! God’s Word assures us that salvation can be obtained in a moment of time and can never be taken from us. Consider 1 John 5. 13 "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life …". Romans 8. 1 states emphatically, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus …". The Lord Jesus Himself said in John 10. 28 "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand."

The gospel presents the good news that simply by trusting Christ alone, you will be saved without a doubt. Let God’s Word speak: "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." The Saviour stated categorically in John 6. 47, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life." Two former preachers, Paul and Silas said in Acts 16. 31, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved …".

My friend, there is no other Saviour; no other means of salvation; no other way to heaven. Do not let anyone deceive you: a wet summer passes, we get over the disappointment, but hell is forever.
