Joy & Sadness - the offering of Christmas

Joy and sorrow are opposite emotional experiences that all of us know throughout our lifetime. Life is like a tapestry of bright and dark colours and often the bright parts shine the brighter when set against a dark background.

I am reminded of Benjamin Malachi Franklin’s poem ‘Just a Weaver’,

What present will you be content with this Christmas?

I think I am quite a contented person. My Christmas present list is usually non - existent, and when asked, I struggle to think of things I really need. Maybe this is because I am so well looked after that I have very little need for anything.

If you were given the choice of any gift I wonder what it would be? The ancient king of Israel, Solomon, when given the choice asked for wisdom. Most of us would like to be wiser, to live well and to make less mistakes.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing

One of the things that I really love about this time of year is the music. I mean all of it, I love all the songs but particularly the Christmas Carols.

We sing the same songs, year after year, and the words get stuck in our heads; we can often recite the words without even thinking about it.

Many people attend Carol Services and Concerts and while a wide range of songs are sung the majority are still Carols. The words of the Carols can teach us a lot about the message of Christmas.

Happiness

'Happy Christmas' A departed friend of mine used to say, ‘Happiness depends upon happenings but joy abides!’ I hear what he was saying because there is a difference isn’t there?

Planning for Christmas

I think I am quite a contented person. My Christmas present list is usually non- existent and when asked I struggle to think of things I really need. Maybe this is because I am so well looked after, that I have very little need of anything.

The whole idea of being content poses questions that we would be wise to ask regularly

Am I satisfied with my life?

Is there meaning in my life that is bigger than merely maintaining my existence?

The Bible suggests that we were not placed on this planet for our own pleasure! We are actually most satisfied when living life in the way God designed. Focusing on self is not the best way although it is our natural bias.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the best example of the right way to live. In fact, He was the only person ever to live up to the exacting and high standards of God as defined in the Bible. In the biblical book, ‘Hebrews’ Jesus is described as 'holy... and undefiled'. BUT in addition to this He lived for the glory of his Father, read John 17:4, and for the good of the people He came into contact with, see Acts 10:38.

No room for Jesus

I wonder if you have ever thought about how unpopular Jesus was in his day. The impression we get at times is that he was loved by everyone right up until his rejection by the Jewish authorities, his prosecution by the Roman authorities and his ultimate death of crucifixion.

From the early days of his time on earth the Lord Jesus was excluded and rejected.

There is quite a considerable period (from age 12-30) where we have very little information about the behaviour and activities of the Lord Jesus but we do have the commentary of God, the Father, when he publicly spoke from heaven (which was a very unusual thing to do) and said the he was delighted with His Son.

Convinced about Christ

Why are Christians are so convinced that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? Well you might ask, it's an excellent question.

Our belief is laid on a very solid foundation. First of all we believe in divine revelation not just human discovery. In fact to learn about something outside of our sphere of experience we all accept we need information from a trustworthy source. If you are serious about discovering the truth - check the Bible out. It is a trustworthy source. Read it, check it's sources, speak to those who believe it, look at it 's accuracy in every sphere it touches. There can only be one answer to the question of the origin of a book that was written over one thousand five hundred years by forty different authors, many of whom did not even know each other. The Bible is God's message to mankind.

Secondly check the facts concerning Jesus Christ. There are over three hundred signposts (biblical predictions/prophecies) which point to him. The chances of them all being fulfilled precisely in the life of one person, at the right time, in the right place are mindblowing odds apart from this fact - God planned it and implemented His plan in a person - His Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible predicts the mode of his conception, the place of his birth, his exile into Egypt, the slaughtering of the innocents, the gifts from the magi and lots more.

Finally look at the prediction about the way that Jesus would die. Psalm 22 and Isaiah 52 describe the horrific death of God's Son a cross. Death by crucifixion was unknown when Psalm 22 was written about 1000 years before the death of Jesus but God knew that was the way that His Son would die.

In closing please listen again to the words of the angels who announced the birth of the Lord Jesus 'For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord'. Is he your Saviour? He died 'for our sins'. He suffered 'the just for the unjust that he might bring us to God'. Will you rest by faith on what the Lord Jesus did to save your soul?

Some new things for 2015

When the Christmas presents have been opened it is great to see the pleasure on the face of the recipient as they look at their gift. A child might squeal with delight when they see their sparkling new bicycle, or much requested toy or game. A young woman might flush with excitement when she displays her new diamond engagement ring, with all the promise that it holds for future life. Us old folks still get the tingle of Christmas having learned through life that it is better to give than to receive. However, receiving the inevitable pair of socks still brings a smile to one’s face!

The New Year’s Eve party at our Gospel Hall was special this year because of the number of families with little children (and older one’s too) enjoying fellowship together. As the chimes of Big Ben rang out on the radio, poppers exploded, hugs were engaged in and a ‘Happy New Year’ kiss given to one and all. Then it was lovely to settle down and sing a few hymns and listen to the Word of God being ministered to us assuring us that the Great God of the ages loves us and will continue to do so for all eternity.

Parents in their wisdom had brought pyjamas for their children to change into, because of the lateness of the hour. To see these little ones sitting on the floor listening to the Word of God, none of them sleeping, all alert and taking in the message, made me realise the potential and prospect for future life and service for God. I remember hearing the story of an evangelist who returned home from a preaching mission, was asked if any people had got saved. He replied, ‘Two and a half’. The enquirer said, ‘Oh yes, two adults and one child’, the preacher replied, ‘Oh no, two children and one adult’, the adult had wasted most of his life in sin whereas the children had most of their life to live for the Lord.

For many Christians a New Year sees them beginning again their daily reading of chapters in Genesis and Matthew as they seek to read the Bible from cover to cover in one year. This practice serves Christians well as they approach each day, to have the scriptures to counsel them for daily life and experience. Do you read the Bible like this? If not, why not start to do so this month.

Many unbelievers criticise the Bible but have never read it. They repeat comments that they have heard others say but do not read the good Book for themselves. Are you one of these? I was! Until January 1957 when I first heard the gospel in an RAF billet at Henlow in Bedfordshire. I got saved at the end of February that year but did not own a Bible. I asked another airman if he could get me a Bible when he went home at the weekend. He asked me what sort of Bible I wanted, I replied, ‘A black one!’ That was all I knew about the Bible, only the colour of the exterior and nothing about the interior, but I did ask him to get me two Bibles, one for me and the other for my wife for when she got saved. She was saved the last day of March, no April fool for her!

The first and last mentions of words in the Bible are important. The first mention of ‘new’ in the Bible is in Exo. 1:8 “Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.” Pharaoh said in Exo. 5:2, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.” That verse tells us of Pharaoh’s arrogance, “Who is the LORD?” and his ignorance, “I know not the LORD” and his disobedience, “neither will I let Israel go.” Pharaoh may have been a new king but he had some old problems.

The last mention in the Bible of ‘new’ is in Revelation chapter 21 verse 5, “And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.” In that book God says that He will give to the overcomer, a new name . At present we have a name that was given to us by our parents before they knew anything about the sort of life that we would live, whereas God will give a name that is appropriate to the life that has been lived for Him.

In chapter 9 verse 5 we read, “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation”. Pop songs are often repetative and have very little substance. The song they sing in heaven is a new song, sung by redeemed people, every one of them saved by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and cleansed by virtue of His shed blood on the cross.

In the first verse of chapter 21 we read, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea”. Some scientists attribute global warming to the discharging of carbon gases into the atmosphere, and polluting it. The oceans are polluted also by harmful waste dumped into them. The earth has its enviromental problems with waste from atomic power and other major polutants. Paul comments in Romans chapter 8 verse 22, “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.” The earth is groaning under the strain that sin has caused, but it will soon be relieved from the burden when Christ returns to earth. Ultimately there will be a new heaven and a new earth that sin will not spoil, that will be wonderful!

Then in chapter 21 verse 2 John says, “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” In 1804 William Blake wrote ‘Jerusalem’, Parry later wrote the tune for this well known anthem. Blake wondered if Christ ever came to England? The Bible tells us that He never left Israel other than when His parents fled with Him as a baby to Egypt. He also longs that Jerusalem will be built by man in England’s green and pleasant land. Not so! Jerusalem in Israel will be rebuilt when Christ returns to earth but New Jerusalem is comprised of people that come out from heaven to occupy a position in space to administer things on earth.

New Name: New Song: New Heaven and New Earth: New Jerusalem.

All Things New. That will do for me. How about you?

CHRISTmas TRADING

During the Christmas season, vast amounts of money pass through the high street banks. This world is all about money. Making it, keeping it and spending it. And in order to get it, you usually have to work.

Shortly before His sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection, the Lord Jesus talked to His disciples about trading in the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 25.14-30). He compared Himself to a businessman who gave varying amounts of money to people to look after while He was away. He wanted them to use the money to do business i.e. to trade. The word trade actually means to 'work or toil'. The Lord gave His servants resources to work with and He expected a 100% growth rate! The servant given five talents made five more, and the servant given two talents made two more. The Lord commended them for their faithfulness and gave them proportionate responsibility in His heavenly kingdom.
But there was a third servant who the Lord draws our attention to. He dug a hole and put his talent into the ground and on the Lord's return, presented it back to Him, untouched. His excuse was that the Lord was hard, austere and oppressive. That lazy servant got a stern rebuke and was cast out into outer darkness. At the very least he should have put the money in the bank to gain interest, let alone worked with it to make it multiply to full advantage. So, the Lord took the money given to the lazy servant and gave it instead, to the servant who had worked the hardest. He knew that it would then be used to full effect.

Serving the Lord begins when a person gets saved, when a person is born again and is filled with His Spirit (Eph. 1.13). An account is instantly opened in the ‘Bank of Heaven’ and the Christian starts the work of investing in heaven’s currency. It is hard work and the rewards are not measured in the currency of this world - money and material things. Instead the Lord Jesus expects us to make full use of the gifts and resources He gives us to show to others His love, like He showed God's love to us. That involves getting to know God as your Father, and behaving in this world like the Lord Jesus did. He did not seek high status even though He is the King of Kings (Rev. 19.6). Instead, in humility and godly fear, He served others, ministering to their needs and in purity of thought and action, demonstrating the principles of God's heavenly Kingdom. It is not possible to be made redundant from that job, or to be underpaid. And the rewards far surpass anything that can be accumulated in this world and are eternal (not left behind at the gates of death as the treasures of this world are). God promises to call all those who are born again His Sons (Rom. 8.15), not just his servants. He gives them eternal life immediately and promises the splendour of heaven in the future. In addition He rewards their faithful service with 'crowns of righteousness' (2 Tim. 4.8) and positions of authority in His future worldwide administration.  It is not possible to serve two masters; it is either the true God or the god of this world i.e. the devil (Matthew 6.24).

Why not make 2014 the time when you choose to serve the Lord and invest in wealth that lasts forever?

Your Christmas Complaint List

What do you find most frustrating about Christmas?

Without sounding like a Dickensian Scrooge this is my list:

1. The excess consumption of food;
2. The spending of money you don't have;
3. The endless wrapping of things which will in seconds be opened and the paper binned - if you are frugal and economical you could reuse the paper!;
4. The receipt of presents that you don't really need.

I think I am quite a contented person. My Christmas present list is usually non- existent and when asked I struggle to think of things I really need. Maybe this is because I am so well look after that I have very little need of anything. This is most likely true!

This whole idea of being content poses questions that we would be wise to ask every once in a while:

Am I satisfied with my life?

Is there meaning in my life that is bigger that merely maintaining my existence?

The bible suggests that we were not placed on this planet for our own pleasure! We are actually most satisfied when living life in the way God designed. Focusing on self is not the best way although it is our natural bias. Isaiah 43:21 and Revelation 4:11, in the bible, state these principles.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the best example of the right way to live. In fact He was the only person ever to live who lived up to the exacting and high standards of God as defined in the Bible, see Exodus 20 etc. In the biblical letter to the Hebrews He is described as 'holy... and undefiled'. BUT in addition to this He lived for the glory of his Father (read John 17:4) and for the good of the people He came into contact with (see Acts 10:38).

I think that you may agree that none of us can hope to reach the standards of perfection that are required of us in the bible. None of us live lives like Jesus did! That puts us in a difficult situation. The bible not only defines the unrelenting standard but it spells out the consequences of falling short of it. One of the most searching statements of the bible is 'for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God' add to this the consequence of sinning (wrongdoing) - 'the wages of sin is death' and the situation becomes impossible.

This is when the offer of forgiveness comes to the surface. God in the bible describes in numerous passages His intention to provide a solution, usually called salvation. One clear statement of truth is this 'Christ died for our sins'. In addition to this we read 'Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that might bring us to God'. In other words the death and resurrection (coming to life again) of Jesus satisfies the legal case against us for all our shortcomings.

How then do we benefit from such a provision? Is it automatic? Do I have to do something to enjoy it? The answer to both questions is no! The only requirement in the word of God is that we recognise and feel the need of forgiveness. When we get to the point were we see our danger and our inability to resolve the issue ourselves then we must turn to God. Leaving everything else behind we need to admit to God our need and cry to Him asking for mercy. The action on our part is 'believe on the Lord Jesus Christ'. That means trust Him, rest on Him and rely on Him as Saviour. The guaranteed response is 'you shall be saved'. Now this will sound crazy to you unless you are already a believer. If not pray and ask God to reveal your need of salvation to you. Your part is to simply believe what God says He will do when you call upon His name.

Finally for those who trust Jesus Christ, as Lord and Saviour, he gives us power to live differently. This is another subject but if you are interested email me (stepcar61@me.com) and I will answer your questions to the best of my ability.

Business on the Up!

The Retail Think Tank produced this on-line report about the health of the UK’s retail business.

“The health of UK retail has shown some signs of improvement over the past quarter and the outlook is looking more encouraging than it has done for some time, particularly as the nation heads into the Christmas season feeling better about itself.

Following its quarterly meeting in October, the KPMG/Ipsos Retail Think Tank (RTT) upgraded its Retail Health Index to 79 and its panel of retail experts forecasted that this could improve to 81 in quarter four.  This would not only mark the highest level since Quarter Three 2011, but the strongest quarter-on-quarter leap for four years.

Two of the three key drivers of retail health – demand and margin - were more positive in quarter three than in the previous quarter, and cost factors over the period were largely neutral. It is the first time for three years that both demand and margins have contributed positively to the improvement of retail health….The RTT predicts an even more promising outlook for UK retail over the next quarter, not only because it’s the Christmas trading period; consumer confidence appears to be on the increase, the housing market is more buoyant and economic conditions are generally improving.

One important consequence, the RTT believes, is that as people become less nervous at losing their jobs and interest rates remain low, they are less intent on saving and becoming more comfortable to spend. And if people do start shopping more, they may be inclined to ‘trade up’ to premium goods, particularly over Christmas.”

The UK’s economy having experienced a double-dip recession plunged many a business into an unhealthy state, so this news from the RTT will put some colour back into the cheeks of boardroom members, and brighten the eyes of their shareholders.

People generally are feeling upbeat about their job security and prospects and are more confident to spend some of their disposable income instead of saving it for a time of possible unemployment.
The construction industry is often first to feel the effects of recession and last to benefit from any recovery, so it is good to hear that business is on the up in that sector with contracts being placed that previously had been put on hold until better days.

Jesus told a parable about a farmer whose business was on the up. Luke 12:16 reads, “The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:  And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

His business plan would have pleased any bank-manager; he was an expansionist and was prepared to invest his potential profits in building new bigger barns. The man may have been good with numbers but he made the great error of neglecting No.1. Many years ago when I was trading as a small jobbing builder, I was a bit run-down and consulted my doctor. He advised me to ease up, saying, “You are your most important asset in your business”. I never forgot that! In my case it was physical and temporary, but in the farmers case it was terminal and spiritual, it concerned his soul.

There is a great danger in making provision for the body and neglecting the soul, the body is not permanent but the soul is.  The big question is - Where will one’s soul be in eternity? A bank-manager might have considered the farmer’s business plan as prudent, but the Lord said that he was a fool to go after the transitory material things at the expense of his soul’s eternal need. What about you my dear reader? A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. ‘To lose one’s wealth is much, to lose one’s health is more, to lose one’s soul in Hell is such that nothing can restore.’

When Christ was born, the Inn Keeper at Bethlehem must have thought that his business was on the up when Caesar commissioned a census and taxation of everyone in the known world. It meant for him that Bethlehem would be inundated with people needing accommodation, and he was right. When the time came every room in his establishment was booked solid, business was booming. To be confronted by a young couple seeking a room, and her being heavily pregnant was something he could do without. There was no consideration on his part about Mary’s condition, no compassion to move him to offer his room for the birth of the Son of God.

One might say that he did not know, he was ignorant about Micah 5:2, “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”

The Inn Keeper missed his opportunity to be involved in the birth of Jesus, for him, the outside place of a stable would be his level of interest in this amazing event of the incarnation of the Son of God.

In 1878 Daniel Whittle adapted the hymn, ‘Have you any room for Jesus’, one verse reads

Room for pleasure, room for business,
But for Christ the crucified,
Not a place that He could enter,
In the Heart for which He died.

The busyness of business, whether on the up, or on the down, can rob a person of the most important decision that a person has to face, that of, what shall I do with Jesus which is called the Christ?

Why not put the Lord in the first place in your life this Christmas, no longer outside but inside directing the future path of your life, and say with Paul, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”.

The life will be altogether on the up!
