Being a Christian is not necessarily an easy option. Believe it or not it takes backbone and courage to stick to what you believe when the majority of people disagree with you. It would often be easier to go with the flow and accept the status quo but to be truthful, that would be a betrayal of my conscience.

I often give public talks in Liverpool City Centre. Street preaching is not socially acceptable but it is legal as long as you don’t cause a breach of the peace or are inflammatory in the language that you use to express yourself. The downside is that you are exposing yourself to ridicule. If you take the liberty of expressing your views in public you have to be willing to listen to what other people have to say and be prepared to defend your viewpoint.

There is always a courteous way to present your point of view but it is important to be honest and above board so that people can trust what you say. In the holy scriptures, the apostle Paul was very keen to make it clear that he was never deceitful or crafty in the way he communicated the message of the gospel. This is what he says - ‘But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God,’ 2 Cor 4. 2.

He had made it his practice to be open and clear when he preached about Jesus. If the message of the Bible (and the gospel of Jesus Christ) is true (and I believe the facts points to this being the case) then it can be scrutinised and investigated honesty.

Philosophy, Fate or Faith?

The apostle Paul had sensibly travelled far south to Athens following hostility to his message in northern Greece. While waiting for his friends, Silas and Timothy, to catch up, Paul, like any other tourist today, looked around the city, viewing the Acropolis, etc. He was quite moved by what he saw. 

 

Athens was then the cultural centre of the Roman Empire. It had been the cradle of democracy and was the centre of learning in just about every field of human interest: philosophy, music, theatre, religion, mathematics and science, etc. It reads like a list of university departments. Indeed, says the Bible, the whole city seemed to be given over to the full-time pursuit of novelty, ‘hearing and telling some new thing’. 

 

Paul followed his normal practice of preaching in the synagogue to Jews and Gentile proselytes. Still, in order to meet others, he went to the marketplace – The Agora - with its public debating place, the Hyde Park Corner of its day, and engaged in street preaching and debating with people he met.

We have learned lots about Paul as we have read the Book of Acts. I have told you about the places he visited. We are going to see three different things happen to him today, tomorrow and the next day.

A Prison Governor's Conversion - Acts 16 Part 3

The third conversion in Philippi was of a most unlikely character. It was the Roman prison officer who had been charged with guarding Paul and Silas. They were beaten and put in the inner prison with their feet in stocks. How would you react if that was you? I think I wouldn't have been too happy but Paul and Silas were heard to be praying and singing praises to God. 

When the earthquake came the Prison Guard thought that all the prisoners had escaped. If that had been the case then he would have lost his life which is why he had his sword out ready to commit suicide rather than be put to death by his superiors. 

Paul saves the say and cries out 'don't do yourself any harm'. Things only get better from then on! The man springs in and asks how he can have what they have i.e. peace with God and joy in the midst of sorrow!

That's what God has on offer through His Son, Jesus Christ. I am praying that you will come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour,

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 and brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. 36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. 37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have castus into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. 38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. 39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. 40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

Celebrity Status - Acts 14

The story continues. Up until now in this book we have been reading mainly about Peter, Philip etc. The main players from chapter 12 of the book are Paul, Barnabas, Silas, Timothy etc. God was working in many people's lives in many different ways - it is just the same today! If God is speaking to you through His word, there Bible, do not ignore it. To ignore God is dangerous and indeed can fatal.

This chapter from the Book of Acts covers a lot of ground, literally! Paul is travelling, as directed by God, so that the maximum number of people hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. God is interested in saving souls and he intentionally sends preachers to tell people His gospel. He still does this today, this blog is just one of the many ways that people hear the message of eternal life, through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

You might notice towards the end of the chapter that the preachers, Paul & Barnabas, are revisiting the places where people have become Christians to see how they are getting on and to help them develop and grow. Becoming a Christian is not a one off event and that's the end. It's the start of a journey and other Christians are willing to help as people make their first steps as new believers.

This is an amazing story! If it happened today it would be splashed across all the media platforms - 'A Terrorist claims to repent and become a Christian'. As you read through Acts chapter nine please bear in mind that this actually happened. Saul of Tarsus was so anti Jesus Christ that he put Christians in prison wherever he could find them. He traveled miles to trap and harass Christians. He even felt that he was justified in killing Christians.

What happened to make him change his mind? Read the story for yourself. My prayer is that even if you think you are one of the good guys that this chapter from Holy Scripture will speak to you and show you that we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. BUT that we can all be saved by repenting and believing the gospel. If you don't understand the terms 'repent', 'believe', 'gospel' etc have a read of my other postings. These terms crop up regularly and you should get an idea of what they mean quite quickly.

Personality Profile of a Christian - Acts 8

I really love this chapter of the Bible. It is full of detail about how people become Christians. The man who is mentioned first, Saul, was totally opposed to Jesus. As you can see from the reading he was determined to rid he world of this new faith, Christianity, but at the end of the day he became a believer. It's funny how things work out!

The second chapter in the chapter is a man call Philip. He was an early church evangelist. This chapter gives us a little insight into how he got out and about with the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Read the whole chapter to get a flavour for what was going on.

Simon is the next person on the stage. You will need to decide if you think he is just playing games with Philip and faith in Jesus or if you think he genuinely believed and then his inquisitiveness got the better of him? 

One of the recurring facts in the Book of Acts is that the price of following Jesus was high and it was a life long commitment. 

The final character we meet is an African Government official. It looks like he had a good job in Ethiopia. He definitely was a thinking man and had been in Jerusalem to worship God. Spot what his reading material was on the journey home and notice how Philip goes to meet him and preaches about Jesus to him in the chariot. The simple lessons I get from this story is the urgency of hearing about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that God's message crosses all cultural and social barriers.
