The Scout Motto - Be Prepared

The Scout Motto of the Scout movement, in various languages, has been used by millions of Scouts around the world since 1907. Most of the member organizations of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) share this same motto.

In English, the Scout Motto is most commonly Be Prepared. In the first part of Scouting for Boys, Robert Baden-Powell explains the meaning of the phrase:

The scouts' motto is founded on my initials; it is:

BE PREPARED,

which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY;

Be Prepared in Mind by having disciplined yourself to be obedient to every order, and also by having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might occur so that you know the right thing to do at the right moment and are willing to do it.

Be Prepared in Body by making yourself strong and active and able to do the right thing at the right moment, and do it.

No hiding place - do you like privacy?

Do you like a bit of privacy? I felt sorry for a famous footballer last year when I saw him, his wife and little one (no clues as to who it was for the sake of privacy) trying to fish for crabs on the Wirral. They did well to remain unobserved for so long. Their backs were to the people who were strolling along the promenade, the buggy was facing the sea, a packet of chips was on the back of the buggy and the only clue of any wealth was the pack of Tesco's Finest pancetta. They were quietly fishing for crabs when someone spotted them. You can imagine what happened next; people were queuing up for a photograph or an autograph and the peace was shattered. It wasn't long until 'the Mrs' decided that it was time to go and they moved on.

Four things For Heaven - Acts 13

1. If you ever want to be in heaven you will need to have a desire to hear the word of God. Salvation is only available through faith and faith comes as a result of hearing the word of God.

2. If you ever want to be in heaven you will need to get to the point where you realise that you are not worthy. You are not worthy to tie the laces of the Lord Jesus, you are not worthy to be accepted by God. You, like everyone else, have sinned and come short of the glory of God. When you get to this point you will understand that only one person can save you, he is called the Lord Jesus Christ.

3. If you ever want to be in heaven you will have to accept that not only did the Lord Jesus Christ die for our sins but that he rose from the dead on the third day. This is the most highly attested fact of history! If you do not believe that Jesus is alive there is no point in me telling you that you need to turn from your sin to him for salvation.

4. In closing please understand this. God is offering to everyone forgiveness for everything that they have ever done, will ever do or could ever do. No one is excluded, no sins are unforgivable except for the sin of unbelief. Unbelief cannot be forgiven as you are refusing to accept God's forgiveness.

Avoiding Hell at all costs!

Would a loving God send people to hell?

Is this the right question or at least does it ignore some of the other issues of justice, choice and righteousness?

To start with let's look at what the bible says about life after death

No 1 - You are not just a body, you are made up of body, soul and spirit.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thess 5.23

No 2 - You are dead in sin (no relationship with God) long before your body dies. That's the result of Adam's sin.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned - Romans 5:12

No 3 - You can have eternal life long before you leave this life.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life - John 3.16

No 4 - You will never cease to exist, only your body will die temporarily. You will be raised to go to either heaven or the Lake of fire.

And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt - Daniel 12:2

But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days - Daniel 12:13

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire Revelation 20:13-15

In regard to why a loving God would punish people, I recently heard one homeless man wisely tell another, “You wouldn’t want to live in a world where God didn’t punish injustices and just freely forgave sin—without any request for someone to choose the salvation He offers back. Imagine a place where injustice was never punished and people never recognized their sin and need for salvation. That would be terrible and painful.”

We all want justice to reign. For a good God to be truly good, injustice must be punished. This is why it makes complete sense that Jesus had to die. There must be a payment for the evil we inflict on the world and one another. Jesus’ death epitomizes God’s mercy and justice—and it all happened in one act.

Let me leave you with a couple of quotes that help as we consider good and evil, right and wrong and heaven and hell.

J B Phillips said "God is indeed all goodness and light but he will show no more compunction towards the evil things that we have allowed to grow in our hearts than a human surgeon would to a malignant growth'.

A visit to Heaven & Avoiding Hell - Friday - The Daily Diary of a Bible Blogger

Jesus had twelve disciples but like King David, his famous ancester, he was very close to a select group of three men, Peter, James & John. 

In this chapter Jesus takes these three men up a mountain. They were quite used to spending time alone with Jesus but this occasion was different. They were to see a temporary change in Jesus that would astound them. You will need to read the details in the chapter to get the full picture of what was going on. Many years later Peter would write 'we were eyewitnesses of his majesty'. He never forgot what he saw. 

In this life you will never see Jesus physically but if you get a sight of him, by faith, it will change your life for ever.
