Take your c@%##! - Mark 8:34

Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (Mark 8.34)

In polite Roman society, it was as bad as swearing to say the word ‘cross.’ No decent Roman ever mentioned it, let alone considered dying on a cross. Jews had a similar horror of crucifixion. It was hanging on a tree, which is cursed in Old Testament Law. However the cross was never far from the Lord Jesus’ mind. He thought about it in eternity, when He was marked out by God as the Lamb. He thought about the cross in history, when the Holy Spirit inspired the prophets to describe those sufferings in intimate detail. He thought about the cross during his earthly life, since He often told His followers that He was going to die.

Are Christians hypocrites? - 1 John 3:11-24

The truth is that Christians can be hypocrites but thankfully most are not! Having said that we are all flawed and make mistakes; the word of God says 'For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God'.  It is the teaching of scripture that Christians should love one another and love their neighbour as themselves - today's passage from the bible states this clearly. It's a hard standard to live up to but God gives help to those who are prepared to trust him.

When people claim that Christians are hypocrites I always ask them to have a good look at the life of Christ. He was no hypocrite! He was, and is, holy, pure and undefiled by sin. That is what qualifies him to be my Saviour!

Christ died for our sins and if you repent (turn from your sin) and trust him he will clear your guilt and give you the strength to live for God's glory and pleasure.
1 John 3:11-24
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Was Jesus just a mythical figure?

Jesus said - "Love your neighbour". BUT was Jesus even a real

man. Once in a while someone decides to prove that Jesus is just a

religious myth! What do YOU think? Was the story of Jesus

developed to create a religion or to control people? I am not so

sure! Listen and let me know where you think the evidence points.

He's got the whole world in His hands!

Remember the song?

It's a celebration of God's loving embrace of everyone in this big old world, and a good tune as well! I think it's a bit of an exaggeration though. God doesn't need both hands to hold the world, in fact the Bible states He is the One who has measured the waters ‘in the hollow of his hand’ (Isa 40 v 12), and that 'In his hand are the deep places of the earth' (Ps 95:4).

Also the lives and destinies of every man, woman and child that have ever lived are held in that mighty clasp. He's the God in whose hand is the 'soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind' Job 12 v 10. Daniel, an Old Testament Prophet, when talking to the most important man on the planet at the time spoke of 'the God in whose hand your breath is'.

But God has done more than create and maintain the universe we live in and all the people in it. He saw us, lost, hopeless and heading for judgement. He loved us, and gave His Son to die on our behalf. Then He raised Him from the dead demonstrating that death's grip had been broken. It took the supreme sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross to achieve this. It is significant that both of the Saviour’s hands are used as proof of His death and resurrection when one of His disciple’s, Thomas, is looking for evidence that He is alive from the dead.

So sure, ‘He's got the itty bitty baby in his hand’, and ‘He's got the whole wide world in His hand’. But in both of His hands, are the indelible marks of the suffering He went through to deliver us from death and Hell itself.

We come under God's protection by accepting that we are sinners, that Jesus ‘Christ died for our sins’ and that He rose from the dead to prove that death had been conquered. He says about those who believe on Him and who have trusted in Him to be their Good Shepherd  'I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand' (John 10:28).

A terrified man once cried out saying, 'Lord, save me'.  And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him. The same strong, wounded hands stretch out to you today.

Will you trust Him to be your Saviour?

Are we getting the message?

I spotted this cute cartoon in local fast food restaurant last week in Birkenhead. It is amazing how a simple sketch can catch your imagination! It gets the message across! I was in no doubt what the message was - put your rubbish in the bin. I didn't need a lot of words, it's simple. Look and learn.

I see life and the message of the bible the same way. The main message is quite simple.

What do you think of when you see this? Do you think of death, finality, fear of the next stage, the end of life? The imagery is not hard to grasp. The bible says "It is appointed unto men once to die, after this....the judgment", Hebrews 9.27.

Most people associate a cross with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The symbolism is clear, a man dying on a cross. There are a lot of questions that this raises if you take the time to stop and think.

Who really was Jesus?
Was his death miscarriage of justice?
Does his death have any real significance in the big scheme of things?
If he never sinned does that mean he was capable of suffering for our sins, to bring us to God?

The answers to these questions, and more, lie in the bible. There is no point in looking elsewhere. The bible is the only communication that God has given to us to answer these questions. I would recommend that you read the following verses for answers. You will get a bible on-line or in most high street book shops. I have quoted the passages below.

Who really was Jesus? John 20:31 says "these are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through his name".

Was his death a miscarriage of justice? The bible says in Acts 2 that Jesus was "a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs" but that the people of the day had taken, and by wicked hands crucified and slain him. In chapter 3 it is stated you "denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted into you". So yes, there was no legal reason to kill the Son of God but his death has provided salvation for those who will repent and trust him.

Does his death have any real significance in the big scheme of things? The bible strenuously states "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and rose again the third day according to the scriptures", 1 Corinthians 15.3,4. Again in 2 Corinthians 5.19 it says "God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses into them".

If Jesus never sinned does that men's he was capable of suffering for our sins, to bring us to God? 1 Peter 3:18 states "For Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring is to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit".
