Titanic Series - No 3 - Prideful People

Please take a look at this video. This is the third in the Interesting Tales - Titanic Series. It is about the attitude and opinions of people in 1912 when the Titanic sank. Not much has changed! But thankfully God still offers forgiveness and salvation to all who repent and come to Him, by faith. For more information please contact me via www.seekthetruth.org.uk. Kind regards. Stephen

One thing that really drives me mad!

I really don’t know about you, but one of the most maddening things that I find about people is that they don’t listen and don’t follow instructions. We all know that happens so often in everyday life. We know that people are told things and they don’t even listen. It could be to do with our health or our money but we often ignore the advice that we are given. Or sometimes people are given guidelines but they ignore them and just do it their own way.
I am writing to point people to what God says in the Bible. But God wants them to listen and to follow His instructions for life. For instance Jesus said one day, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me” (John 14.6 – the Bible). If you follow that instruction you will become a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ.
If you come to understand that Jesus is the Son of God you’ll believe what he said. He said I am the way to God, you can’t come to God any other way. Why then do people go to religion? Why do people try all sorts of different things? One reason is that we all have a deep desire to know the truth. We also have an innate impulse to recognise and worship a greater being. Many years ago Dr Billy Graham asked an anthropologist why do all humans worship, no matter the culture, the civilisation, the time period or the level of intelligence or sophistication? The conclusion was nature not nurture - it is in our nature to do it.
Peter (one of the early preachers) he said, “Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men where by we must be saved” (Acts 4.12 – the Bible). Peter doesn’t give you a choice or alternatives. He says on the authority of what God has said in the Bible there is no other way of salvation.
We need to be rescued, we need forgiveness, we need to be brought to God and there’s only one route because God decided it and it’s through faith in Jesus Christ.
Would you rest on the work Jesus did when He died on the cross. I wonder if today you would simply hear the voice of God and refuse to harden your heart and do what He says:
  • Turn from your sin
  • Obey the gospel
  • Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
I know that for most this all seems very narrow minded and prescriptive! Somethings in life are like that! You don't get a range of options on how to deal with cancer; you follow the tried and tested route to get rid of it and hopefully survive and enjoy life for a little longer. The same can be said for many things in life. The issue of your soul, your spiritual health and God is so important that to be safe you need to go down the prescribed route. God says if you follow my instructions you’ll be saved. I trust that God will richly bless you today.

Here is the parallel.

God can be trusted; men can't always be trusted

Some things in life are unavoidable - you can avoid the judgement of God

Lifeboats were not available but salvation is available for all.

Jesus who?

Thursday, 9 July 2015

Well what have I been up to today? I have visited two schools and have been talking to boys and girls about some of the stories of Jesus. In the first school I spoke about the account of the Lord Jesus feeding 5000 men and women and children as recorded in John ch 6. This is quite an amazing incident.

The Lord Jesus Christ is no ordinary person. I make this statement in the present tense because the Lord Jesus is not just a figure of history but he is, today, still alive in heaven. I don't mean alive in the way we might think about a relative who has died and hope is now in heaven (as a Christian I believe people who have turned from their sin and accepted Jesus as their Saviour will be in heaven when they die but this is not my point at the moment). I mean that Jesus is alive, physically in heaven. Your response might be - impossible and unbelievable!

The record of the life of Christ is all highly improbable if you ignore the key ingredient, God. I agree that believing that Jesus was more than a man, lived an absolutely faultless life, could do miracles, somehow became accountable for sin and evil and died to pay the price to deal with it on a cross outside Jerusalem and finally three days after his death came back to life. Add to that he lived on earth for forty days after his suffering, death and resurrection and physically rose from the earth and passed through the sky and space into the presence of His Father, God in heaven itself. On a purely rationale level this sounds like I am stretching facts and calling it truth!

BUT WHAT IF......

A careful analysis of the facts points to Jesus being the Son of God!
The evidence points to it being statistically impossible for the historical predictions (the bible calls them prophecies) being fulfilled accurately being mere coincidence!
It was impossible to deceive so many historians and eye witnesses on a such a grand scale!
The probability of it being the truth is higher than the probability of it being a lie?

I believe that this is the truth of the matter. I believe that the evidence to the authenticity of the bible is there if you care to look for it. I believe there is no other honest conclusion that you can come to about who Jesus is if you are prepared to genuinely look at the facts.

In support of this the bible clearly states: 'these are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life in his name', John 20:31.

Wriggle Room?

The greatest thing that you can give to God is your respect. I don't mean a vague acknowledgment that He exists but your worship, praise and obedience. The Bible says that we should love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind, Exodus 20. This is the first of the 10 Commandments.

Jesus taught that the 10 Commandments could be summarised in two statements. The first one being the one we have already quoted and the second is that we should "love that our neighbour as our self", Matthew 22:39.

I think if we're honest we would all have to admit that we fall short on both of these counts. I know of no one who loves God with all their heart. I also don't know anyone who loves their neighbour the same way as they love themselves.

To be blunt I feel that the words of Jesus clearly prove that we are all sinners!! You may want to disagree but you'll find it hard to wriggle out of this conclusion.

If you understand what the Lord Jesus is teaching then I think the next step will be very clear to you. You'll need to look for a solution to this problem of sin and death. The solution is the Lord Jesus. He is your accuser and is willing to be your Saviour. He came into the world "to save sinners", 1 Timothy 1:15. He clearly claimed to come so that we could have life, John 10:10 (being currently dead in sins, Ephesians 2:5).

Your response will determine your future standing before God - what will you choose?

#7/7 - Honouring our Heros

I was in a school in West Derby, Liverpool telling boys and girls about one of the miracles that Jesus Christ did. In John's Gospel ch 6 it is recorded that Jesus multiplied food miraculously to 5000 men, besides women and children from five loaves and two fish. This meal was provided by a young boy. As far as we know it was his lunch. Andrew one of Jesus disciples brought the boy to Jesus. The boy was happy for the Lord Jesus to use his lunch to feed the multitude. I wonder if you would be prepared to give what you have to help others. Many people think that they can only help others when they have a lot to give. This is quite wrong as God can use what ever we have if we place it at his disposal. On this day ten years ago many helped the victims of the 7/7 bombings. They didn't intend to be hero's they just did what they could. We honour them today.
