Anniversaries!

October is a difficult month for us. It sees anniversaries come and go of deep loss. Somebody once said to me how strange it is, to think that we pass the anniversary of our death every year not knowing which day it will be. The day our soul will slip invisibly from this tangible, material, everyday world, into the timeless existence of the never ending hereafter. Do you believe in an ever after? I guess it's much easier not to - but does that belief change what will be?

The morning my mother-in-law died we had a very strange experience. I was woken by a light, piercingly bright, streaming through our bedroom window. I remember curling up beneath the duvet, screwing my fists into my eyes to stop the piercing beams hurting them. 'Heaven is calling, heaven is calling' said a voice as I struggled to withstand the light's white beams. Struggling for breath I cautiously opened my eyes...and was astonished to find the room absolutely dark. Shaking I looked at the clock - 5.15 am. No light in the window at all. Utter darkness! I remembered my prayer before sleep had finally engulfed me, pleading with the Lord for my husband to have time to say 'goodbye' to his mum. Should we go down to see her? Was the Lord telling me the time was near? My restless worry soon woke my sleeping husband. 'You ok' I asked. 'Yes' he said 'but it's odd..as I slept I heard a voice...it was saying 'it's time to meet the Lord. It's time to meet the Lord.'

I am ashamed to say that we didn't dash out into the cold dawn bold in faith as we should have done. Instead our whispered doubt was interrupted at 5:40 am by the telephone. It was no surprise to hear a broken voice say 'Can you come..I'm down at Dad's ... she's gone to be with the Lord'.

Difficult though it is to look death in the eye, we all need to do so one day. Have you ever felt like you were standing on the threshold of that other world? We cannot hide from God's presence like I tried to hide from the light. A leap of faith is required, responding to His call, believing that Jesus Christ is the sinless Son of God and that He lived here with the express purpose of dying instead of us. Through His death and resurrection He offers us life - an ever after with Him in heaven, 'a place that has to be believed to be seen'. Will you be there?

Jesus said unto her 'I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:' John 11 v 25

Good News for Footie

Tonight's message to the boys explained that you need to realise that we have all 'sinned and come short of the glory of God'.

If we don't get this clearly in your mind you will not see the need for getting right with God.

The message of Christ's death, burial and resurrection is only relevant when we see our need and the danger we are in.

After that it's plain sailing:

Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10).

Forever 21

This weekend a new shop opens in Liverpool.

Forever 21! Great concept, great marketing and hopefully for the investors, a great business success and plenty of retail sales. The reality is none of us who have passed the 21 mark will ever be 21 again. Life creeps on! Time flys!

My granny used to say when she was asked her age "I'm 21 and a bit and the bits my own business". Eternal youth! Would you like to be 21 years of age for ever. I for one wouldn't especially in a world like ours.

As I sign off two verses from the bible, one a word of advice, one more of a warning.

Quote 1.
"Remember now your creator in the days of your youth". (Ecclesiastes 12.1).

Believe it of not most of your opinions about life, values etc are formed before you are 25. Think about God while you can, one day you might not be up to it.

Quote 2
"Boast not yourself of tomorrow for you know not what a day may bring forth"
(Proverbs 27.1)

Don't take life for granted. Make the big choices now. Believe the gospel of Jesus Christ while you have time.

Water covers 71% of the earth's surface and....!

I have a puzzle for you. We were taught at school that the chemical formula of water is H2O, being two parts Hydrogen and one part Oxygen. Hydrogen as a gas burns and so does Oxygen but put together they produce water which extinguishes fire!!

Wikipdeia gives some interesting thoughts about water, it says, ‘Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface, and is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, 96.5% of the planet's water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland, a small fraction in other large water bodies, and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Only 2.5% of the Earth's water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice and groundwater. Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere, and an even smaller amount of the Earth's freshwater (0.003%) is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.’ All these statistics compute to produce this fact that planet earth has an abundance of water and is rightly called the ‘Water Planet’.

In 2005 my wife and I went to Canada to celebrate our golden wedding. One of the places we went to was a ‘must visit’ to Niagra Falls. There are three waterfalls at Niagra, the biggest one is the Horseshoe Falls, it is 165 feet from top to bottom. Wikipedia says, ‘More than six million cubic feet (168,000 m3) of water falls over the crest line every minute in high flow, and almost four million cubic feet (110,000 m3) on average.’ A ‘must trip’ on the boat ‘Maid of the Mist’ takes you quite close to the waterfall, the noise is tremendous and spray envelops the boat, thankfully the plastic raincoats given to us prevented a good soaking. One of the sights is to see the rainbows being produced as light passes through the spray. What a wonderful reminder of the time when God completely destroyed all flesh at the universal flood, saving alive only eight souls in the Ark. God said to Noah, “And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.”

Governments are spending billions of dollars to enable atheistic scientists to probe space seeking to find water and lifeforms on other planets in order to propound their teaching that life originated from the sea. Oh that these men and women would progress from this blind unbelief, perhaps passing via ‘Intelligent design’ and coming to the point of accepting that God in his wisdom and power created all things. They need look no further than the first verse of the Bible, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” If we fall at the first verse then there is little hope of accepting that every word of God is true, one will pick and choose verses and passages from the Bible that sit easy on the conscience. No way will an atheist accept that God exists or that He intervened in jugement at the Flood, or that He will do so again as Jesus said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”

The last chapter of the Bible tells us of the Tree of Life, the Book of Life and concludes with the Water of Life. Christ said, I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and  from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

I do not know what the chemical formula is of the Water of Life, but I do know this, that this water is freely provided for all those who will inhabit Heaven. Will you be there?  God bless.

Good to know help is on its way

Last week I ended up in hospital unexpectedly. Apart from being totally impressed by the standard of care I received I saw this wonderful sight out of my ward window - a Sea King Rescue Helicopter.

I'm not just thinking about the thrill of the machine or excitement of flying but reflecting on what that yellow bird must mean to you when you think hope is lost and you are about to give up. It becomes your saviour, the way to life, the means of your escape.

This is exactly the way you would view Jesus Christ if you understood the danger you were in. If we grasped that we are broken and in danger of God's judgment we would appreciate the salvation and rescue that is available through Jesus Christ.

Two verses from the bible as I close:

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - 1 Timothy 1.15

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life - John 3.16
