NC500 Part 3

We left Gairloch around lunchtime with the intention of heading up the west coast to Durness. It was fascinating talking to the locals as I had worked in Gairloch 35 years ago. I have included a picture of the Bank. This is apparently the third bank building in Gairloch though I worked in the second one which was a Swiss Chalet building. 

We stopped at Ullapool for lunch and tasted the wonders of Steak & Haggis pie and Breakfast pie (square sausage, egg, bacon i.e. the works). It was a brilliant treat. 

The remainder of the drive was mainly on one track roads in rain and mist. The weather enhances the Scottish scenery as opposed to ruining it. 

Stage 4 to Wick tomorrow - I’m sure you can’t wait. 

NC500 Part 1

The first stage of our NC500 trip started with sunshine. The weather on the West Coast changes by the minute but no matter whether it’s rain, mist, sun or hail this is an endearing part of the world.

This was an amazing first stage. God’s creation is quite amazing and seeing it in all its beauty stills your heart and lifts your spirits.

What a web we weave

 

I was visiting my mother in Scotland recently and having a look round her garden. One of the local artisans was painting her shed at the time, and so I was checking if the job was being done properly - this in itself is a bit humorous as I am 'Mr Not - DIY - International'. But, as dutiful sons do, I was checking to see if the paint was drying (I thought it did that itself!) and if the shed needed another coat. If you met my mother you would know that she wouldn't accept my word for it and would be checking later to see if the work was up to a satisfactory standard - which she did!

My trip to the North of Scotland

I am currently in the North of Scotland for a week visiting a High School in Lossiemouth. My aim is to talk to young people about the greatest man who ever lived. You might have an opinion about who that person was! I am persuaded that it was Jesus Christ. His influence lives on not only in terms of those who personally believe in him as their Saviour but in the way our society operates.

For instance:

Our dating system (2013 AD) starts from the birth of Christ.
Our civil rights are based on his teachings.
Our healthcare system is based on the care of the individual and compassion that Jesus taught.
Our legal system operates on the principles that were established in scripture and made popular by Jesus Christ.

and so on....

I wonder if you realise the effect that this man, the Son of God, has had on our world. In some ways it is not enough. The failure does not lie in the hand of the Lord Jesus Christ but our unwillingness to submit to his authority, to confess our guilt before God and to rest on Christ as Saviour and Lord.

Imagine what society would be like if there was no theft, no anger management required, no embezzling of funds, no greed in business, no abuse, no murder, no broken homes, no addiction! Wow, it would be incredible.

I could introduce you to homes where repentance of sin and faith in Christ has brought about many of these changes.

One day, the bible teaches, Jesus will return and set up a world wide government and he will show the world what it would have been like if things had been done God's way. As a Christian I cannot wait to see these things happen.

Good to know help is on its way

Last week I ended up in hospital unexpectedly. Apart from being totally impressed by the standard of care I received I saw this wonderful sight out of my ward window - a Sea King Rescue Helicopter.

I'm not just thinking about the thrill of the machine or excitement of flying but reflecting on what that yellow bird must mean to you when you think hope is lost and you are about to give up. It becomes your saviour, the way to life, the means of your escape.

This is exactly the way you would view Jesus Christ if you understood the danger you were in. If we grasped that we are broken and in danger of God's judgment we would appreciate the salvation and rescue that is available through Jesus Christ.

Two verses from the bible as I close:

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - 1 Timothy 1.15

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life - John 3.16
