Does the weather affect your mood?

What was the first thing you noticed this morning when you got up? Maybe I should reword that. I am not thinking about your beautiful spouse or children. My question really is – did you notice if it was sunny or rainy? Did the weather annoy you or concern you?

Some summers are really a bit of a non-event. I’ll not go into the precise statistics, but it seems that often summers come and go with little evidence that we actually had one.
Life is like that for a lot of us. Some people feel that it has passed them by. The dreams of yesterday never quite became the reality of today. The wish list remained just that – a wish list. If only.  Life need not be like that. I believe that God’s desire for humanity is to lift our gaze from the mundane things of life and to give us hope, but more of that in a moment.

A Philosopher’s Eloquence

I once listened to a philosopher who eloquently described the various stages that we all go through in life. He said we start with enchantment, progress to accumulating knowledge, develop love and romance and end up cementing our lives into some state of security. It was an interesting take on the stages of life. He ended by saying that the most successful people in life manage to hold on to major elements of all of these stages of life. They are still enchanted and excited by life; they thirst for knowledge, are emotionally fulfilled, have good relationships and are stable and secure.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ

So why am I writing about this? I believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the answer to our cynicism. Major damage to humanity took place when sin came into the world. This event is described in the Bible; it says, ‘by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin’1. The Bible categorically states the reason why sin and death exist in the world. It is because the first man, Adam, chose to ignore God’s warning and disobey him. The danger is that we perpetuate the same crime when we refuse to hear God’s voice in His word, the Bible.

A Sad Bible Verse

One of the saddest verses in the Bible, to me, is when it says people ‘refused the love of the truth that they might be saved’2. As a result, people miss the forgiveness that God offers through faith in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
We can still enjoy the enchantment of life, the thrill of learning, the joy of living and the security of being safe for this life and the next when we come, as Jesus said, ‘as little children’. Have a good month. God bless.
