December 31st 2025

All 365 days of 2025 have come and are nearly gone now, writes Bert Cargill of St Monans Gospel Hall. This last day of December will close the year at midnight. Will you stay up to “bring in” the New Year, maybe sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’, be sociable and perhaps noisy? Or will you be quietly thinking back, perhaps on your own, off to bed to get ready for another day, another year?

Either way, I want to wish you good health and happiness in the days ahead. The last day of the year is actually just another day, but we make it special because of how we arrange our calendars wherever we live.

In the far east, 2025 will end hours before us, or it will end hours after that in the west - our planet Earth rotates speedily and steadily, oblivious to our calendar dates!

For all that, there are ‘last days’ which you and I have experienced, and we can’t forget them. Maybe the last day of a spectacular holiday, or your last day at work, or your last day with a special friend or loved one, or the last day of hospital treatment, or something else. Some of these make you sigh with relief, some bring regret, some still make you smile. That’s life!

Here is another one. On the last day of a religious festival to which crowds had come in Jerusalem long ago, Jesus stood and cried, “If anyone is thirsty, come to Me and drink!” Find the story in John 7.37. He wasn’t offering a drink for the road home but new life to those who were still unsatisfied with religion. By believing in Him and accepting the salvation He offered to them, eternal life and peace with God was His enduring gift. He offers this to us also on this last
day of 2025, or whatever day you are reading this. I do hope you have received it.
