When Paul wrote to the Christians in Ephesus, he wasn’t writing to strangers. He knew these people. He had preached to them, wept with them, prayed with them, and watched God save them. Their story begins in the book of Acts, continues through Ephesians, is strengthened in 1 & 2 Timothy, and is warned again in Revelation.
And through it all, one message shines:
Salvation is God’s plan, God’s work, and God’s gift — not ours.
1. How the Gospel First Reached Ephesus (Acts 18–20)
Ephesus was a city full of idols, magic, immorality, and spiritual darkness. But God had a plan for them before the world began (Ephesians 1:4).
In Acts, we read:
• Paul preached the Gospel boldly.
• Many believed in the Lord Jesus.
• People burned their magic books.
• The whole city was shaken by the message of Christ.
This is what the Gospel does — it rescues, changes, and transforms.
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved.”
— Acts 16:31
Not “behave better.”
Not “try harder.”
Not “keep the rules.”
Just believe.
2. God’s Eternal Plan — Before the World Began
Paul tells the Ephesians something astonishing:
“He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world.” — Ephesians 1:4
Before you were born…
Before you sinned…
Before you tried to fix yourself…
Before you even existed…
God planned a way to save you.
And that way is Christ.
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” — Ephesians 1:7
Redemption means bought back, rescued, set free.
3. Salvation Is by Grace — Not Works
If Ephesians teaches anything, it teaches this:
“By grace you are saved through faith… not of works.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
Grace means undeserved kindness.
You cannot earn salvation.
You cannot work for it.
You cannot deserve it.
Christ did the work.
Christ paid the price.
Christ finished the work of salvation.
“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” — 1 Timothy 1:15
This is the Gospel.
4. What God Does In Us When We Believe
Paul explains that when someone trusts Christ:
• God makes them alive (Ephesians 2:5).
• God forgives their sins (Ephesians 1:7).
• God seals them with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13).
• God brings them into His family (Ephesians 2:19).
• God gives them a new life to walk in (Ephesians 2:10).
This is not self‑improvement.
This is a new creation.
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
5. Paul Sends Timothy to Help the Church (1 & 2 Timothy)
Years later, Paul sends Timothy to Ephesus to strengthen the believers.
Why?
Because false teachers were creeping in.
Some were adding rules.
Some were twisting the Gospel.
Some were turning away from the truth.
So Paul tells Timothy:
• Preach the Gospel clearly.
• Guard the truth.
• Point people to Christ.
• Keep salvation by grace at the centre.
“There is one God, and one mediator… Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 2:5
Not the law.
Not religion.
Not human effort.
Only through the Lord Jesus Christ.
6. The Final Word to Ephesus — Revelation 2
Decades later, the Lord Jesus Himself sends a message to the church in Ephesus:
• They were hardworking.
• They were doctrinally sound.
• They were careful about false teaching.
But they had lost their first love.
They had the truth — but not the warmth.
They had the doctrine — but not the devotion.
The Gospel is not just information.
It is love — God’s love for sinners.
“We love Him because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19
7. The Gospel Message for You
If you are not a Christian, here is the message of Ephesians in one breath:
• You are a sinner (Romans 3:23).
• You cannot save yourself (Titus 3:5).
• Christ died for your sins (1 Corinthians 15:3).
• Christ rose again (1 Corinthians 15:4).
• Salvation is a gift (Ephesians 2:8).
• You receive it by faith (John 3:16).
This is God’s plan.
This is God’s grace.
This is God’s Son.
And this salvation is offered to you.
A Final Thought
Ephesus shows us the whole sweep of the Gospel:
• Acts — how God saves people.
• Ephesians — why God saves people.
• Timothy — how God strengthens saved people.
• Revelation — how God warns saved people.
And at the centre of it all is Christ:
“In whom we have redemption through His blood.” — Ephesians 1:7
