John wrote his Gospel as an older man looking back over a lifetime of walking with the Lord Jesus. He wasn’t guessing. He wasn’t repeating rumours. He was an eyewitness. He had seen the miracles, heard the teaching, watched the crowds react, and stood at the foot of the cross. And now, near the end of his life, he tells us why he wrote it all down:
“These are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you might have life through His name.” (John 20:31)
That is the heartbeat of the whole book. John wants you to know who Jesus really is and to have eternal life.
Seven Signs That Point to Jesus as the Son of God
John chooses seven signs—seven miracles—to prove that Jesus is not just a good teacher or a kind healer, but God Himself. Each sign is like a spotlight showing His power:
• Turning water into wine (John 2)
• Healing the nobleman’s son (John 4)
• Healing the lame man at Bethesda (John 5)
• Feeding the five thousand (John 6)
• Walking on water (John 6)
• Giving sight to the man born blind (John 9)
• Raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11)
These aren’t random acts of kindness. They are deliberate signs showing that Jesus has the power of God—power over sickness, nature, blindness, and even death.
The “I AM” Statements — Jesus Tells Us Who He Is
Throughout the Gospel, Jesus uses the divine name “I AM”, the name God used in the Old Testament. But he adds pictures to help us understand:
• “I am the Bread of Life” (John 6:35) — He alone satisfies the hunger of the soul.
• “I am the Light of the World” (John 8:12) — He brings clarity, truth, and hope into our darkness.
• “I am the Door” (John 10:9) — “If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.”
• “I am the Good Shepherd” (John 10:11) — He cares, protects, and lays down His life for the sheep.
• “I am the Resurrection and the Life” (John 11:25) — He conquers death.
• “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6) — There is no other way to God.
• “I am the True Vine” (John 15:1) — Real life flows only from Him.
Put them all together, and you get a full, rich picture of the Lord Jesus as the Son of God, come to bring life to a dying world.
Classic Gospel Verses — Clear and Simple
John’s Gospel is full of verses that explain the gospel so plainly that anyone can understand.
God’s Love
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
A Personal Choice
“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life.”
(John 3:36)
A Present Promise
“He who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” (John 5:24)
A Simple Invitation
“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.” (John 10:9)
These verses don’t describe a complicated religion. They describe a Saviour who gives eternal life to anyone who trusts Him.
So Who Is Jesus — Teacher or God?
That is the big question John answers.
Was Jesus just a wise man?
Was he simply a miracle worker?
Or is He truly God?
John leaves no room for doubt:
“The Word was God… and the Word became flesh.” (John 1:1,14)
And if He is God, then His death on the cross is not just a tragedy—it is the sacrifice that takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
His resurrection is not just a miracle—it is the guarantee that He can give eternal life to all who believe.
What Difference Does This Make to You?
John’s Gospel is not just history. It is an invitation.
If Jesus is the Son of God…
If He died for your sins…
If He rose again…
If He offers eternal life freely…
…then the most important question you will ever answer is this:
Will you believe in Him?
John’s message is simple, direct, and urgent:
“These things are written… that believing you might have life through His name.”
Life now.
Life forever.
Life through Christ.
